Water Quality Coordinating Committees: Participation and Assistance

The Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board (CNY RPDB) participates regularly on and assists the Water Quality Coordinating Committees (WQCCs) of each of its five counties. WQCCs serve as communication and collaboration vehicles for water quality activities in all counties across New York State. WQCC membership is voluntary and includes local agencies and organizations actively involved in water quality management, such as county planning, soil and water conservation districts, health departments, natural resources conservation service, and cooperative extension, as well as regional planning and lake-related associations and groups. Each WQCC has a County Water Quality Strategy, prepared and updated regularly by the WQCC, which serves as a guidance tool for prioritizing and carrying out water quality programming in the county.

The CNY RPDB assists its county WQCCs with the update of their County Water Quality Strategies and provides other assistance on an as needed basis to the WQCCs. Other assistance activities have included providing editorial review of the Owasco Lake State of the Lake Report and updating Oswego County's Water Quality Accomplishments publication. Through the Board's regular participation on these WQCCs it provides its counties with updates on relevant state and federal programs, as well as efforts with which the Board is involved. Through this involvement the CNY RPDB also strives to identify regionally needed water quality programming. Initiatives to come out of the Board's close involvement with its counties and county WQCCs include large-scale watershed management plans such as those for Cayuga and Oneida Lakes.
